Act 3 opens with the coronation of Macbeth. Macbeth begins to worry about one of the witches prophecies which state that Banquo will beget kings. With Banquo and his son Fleance guests at Macbeths castle, Macbeth plans for Banquo and Fleance to be killed.
After arranging the deaths of Banquo and Fleance, he begins to regret the murder he has already committed. He tells his regrets to Lady Macbeth and also informs her of his plot to kill Banquo and Fleance.
While out horse riding, Banquo and Fleance are set upon by the murderers that Macbeth has arranged to kill them. Banquo is killed, but Fleance escapes. At Macbeths Banquet the murderers inform Macbeth that Banquo is dead but Fleance has escaped. After hearing the news, Macbeth is alarmed to see the ghost of Banquo. Macbeth starts speaking to the ghost and Lady Macbeth plays Macbeths behaviour down to the guests. The ghost disappears and Macbeth regains composure. However the ghost reappears and Macbeth acts erratically again. Lady Macbeth ends the banquet and tries to reassure her husband. We then see the witches and Hecate who is unhappy with the witches for not including her in their meetings. Hecate goes on to tell them they must reassure Macbeth. In the last scene of the act Lennox and Lord discuss the recent deaths. And reach agreement that the suspect Macbeth. Lord reveals to Lennox that in England, Malcolm is gathering an army to overthrow Macbeth.
